Raman Chemical Imaging for Solid Dosage Forms

[News vom: 14.07.2010]

Chemical Imaging (CI) and mapping systems, based on Raman-, infrared (IR), and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, combine both conventional optical imaging and spectroscopy to attain spatial, lateral and spectral information from an object.

These approaches present themselves as rapid, non-destructive and non-invasive methods which already became relevant as leading process analytical technologies (PAT) for the pharmaceutical industry, covering process monitoring and quality control in the many stages of drug production. The here illustrated Raman chemical map provides information about the chemical composition within a pharmaceutical formulation in a very straightforward fashion. Combining the spectroscopic data with multivariate data analysis (MVDA) allows qualitative investigations in terms of active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) as well as for excipient and lubricant distribution or even for quantifying tablet-coating thickness.
