Our research programme

Our research programme is divided in three areas.

Area I is devoted to the development and implementation of computational modeling tools, simulation software and theoretical concepts. Due to the multiscale nature of the effects (i.e., from the molecular towards the reactor scale) in the production of pharmaceuticals and diagnostics, Area I does not a priori distinguish between product- and process-related modeling research. Thus, some projects will be devoted to product engineering, while others may relate to process engineering. However, expertise and competence in both fields – product and process – are needed for successful implantation of efficient simulation tools.

Area II
, on top of Area I, is devoted to products, i.e., the engineering of products, their properties and their structuring methods.

Finally, Area III is the area of process engineering science, i.e., it encompasses problems associated with process design, scale-up, control and optimization.

The strategic goals of the RCPE are:

  • Overall Goal 1: To combine multi-disciplinary competence from chemical and mechanical engineering, biotechnology, chemistry, pharmaceutical technology and materials science to develop a coherent scientific basis for a predictive understanding of process and product development fundamentals.
  • Overall Goal 2: In close interaction with Austrian and international pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and diagnostic partner companies to develop methods for designing, optimizing, scaling and controlling the manufacturing of their next-generation products.
  • Overall Goal 3: To integrate targeted educational, gender-mainstreaming and human resource development activities needed to implement science-based approaches for design and optimization products, while protecting the IP generated in the Center.
