Recent medicine shortages highlight the vulnerability of Europe’s manufacturing base and its dependence on Asian API suppliers. RCPE addresses these risks by developing faster, greener, and more cost-effective manufacturing routes, including API flow synthesis, continuous manufacturing, and decentralized production.
RCPE has also patented a “smart stockpiling” technology that combines ultra-long-term API storage (20+ years) with rapid production of finished dosage forms, cutting costly, wasteful storage of packaged medicines with limited shelf life – an approach now being driven forward together with Austrian and European agencies.
The Problem: Europe's Fragile Medicine Supply
- More than 70% of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are produced in China or India, creating a strategic dependence on international supply chains. Geopolitical tensions, trade conflicts, and natural disasters further threaten already stretched supply chains.
- In Austria alone, nearly 500 medicines covering around 100 different APIs are currently unavailable or only available to a limited extent – a problem seen across Europe, the US, and the Middle East.
- Conventional manufacturing lead times run 9–12 months, driven by raw material delivery times, discontinuous production steps at different sites, low facility flexibility, and batch-by-batch release.
- Classical stockpiling offers immediate availability but is cost-intensive, requires large storage volumes, and medicines must be destroyed and replenished every 3–5 years due to limited shelf life.
RCPE's Approach: Smart Stockpiling Meets High-Speed Production
Rather than storing finished, short-lived medicines, RCPE has developed proprietary technology that allows storage of API for many years – that is, only a small fraction of a medicine’s volume that actually carries its therapeutic value is stored – and converts it into finished doses only when needed.
